Checkout language

Shopify shows default messages at checkout based on the purchase type. Which message your customers see depends on the Supercycle method they’re buying. Most of the messages were written for consumable subscriptions, so they can read oddly on a rental. You can edit them in Shopify’s theme content editor.

Resale and calendar methods

Deferred purchase message

Resale and calendar orders use Shopify’s deferred purchase system, so checkout shows a default message above Pay now:

One or more items in your cart is a deferred or subscription purchase. By continuing with your payment, you agree that your payment method will automatically be charged at the price and frequency listed on this page until it ends or you cancel. All cancellations are subject to the cancellation policy.

This confuses customers when there are no recurring charges. Change it to something that fits your store, for example:

One or more items in your cart are rental or resale products. By continuing, you agree that you are paying in full upfront for these items and agree to the cancellation policy.

To edit this message, search for the Buyer consent product field. You can also find it by searching for the default content, such as One or more items. To remove the message, clear the field and save.

Subscription, membership, and card vaulting

The messages in this section appear whenever the cart contains a Shopify subscription. That includes the subscription and membership methods, and any checkout that includes the card vaulting product.

Auto-renewal disclosure

When the cart contains a subscription, Shopify shows this disclosure above Pay now:

Your cart contains an automatically renewing subscription. By clicking “Pay now,” you expressly and affirmatively agree that you will be automatically charged the recurring amount(s) shown in your cart (plus shipping and taxes) until the subscription(s) ends or you cancel. You may cancel anytime by going to your account or contacting the store. Please see the cancellation policy.

Recurring subtotal text

The order summary shows a Recurring subtotal line, for example First payment $0.00, then $0.00 every 12 months. With the card vaulting product this shows the vaulting plan’s $0.00 amount and interval, and the “every 12 months” wording confuses customers who aren’t expecting a subscription. This text can be edited on all plans. To edit it, search for recurring totals. The line is built from two fields:

• Checkout subscriptions recurring totals with policies first cycles holds the First payment {{ total_price }} part.
• Checkout subscriptions recurring totals with policies holds the , then {{ total_price }} every {{ interval }} part.

Update the text around the {{ ... }} placeholders, then save.

Recurring shipments label

A subscription is charged on a recurring basis, and Shopify treats each charge as a shipment because it expects a consumable subscription rather than a rental. At checkout this shows as Recurring Shipments followed by a shipping profile and amount, for example Economy $19.00. Supercycle doesn’t charge this amount on recurring charges, so the label misleads. Reword it for customers, for example Any recurring shipments. To edit it, search for the Checkout shipping shipping method recurring shipments group title field. The search can be fiddly, so try Recurring shipment first, then Recurring Shipments.

Free shipping frequency label

Under the recurring shipments group, each subscription item shows its own delivery line. For a monthly selling plan it reads Free shipping every month. Shopify adds this line for every subscription selling plan in the cart, including the card vaulting product. Like the group title above it, it describes a consumable subscription’s shipments rather than a rental, so you may want to reword or hide it. To edit it, search for the Subscription free with frequency label field, under Checkout shipping subscription delivery description. Its default value is Free shipping {{ delivery_frequency }}, where the placeholder renders the selling plan’s interval, such as “every month”.
